Blacking
Our 2-part epoxy blacking systems are applied to stand the test of time we work to shipping specs on depth of paint and painting conditions we recommend that the base plate is done at the same time as your hull sides to give maximum protection of your investment. We are now 10 years in to using jotomastic and the boats we see coming back have only needed minimum recoating to damaged areas. The epoxy jotomastic 90 is impervious to diesel and oil unlike any bitumen-based blacking guaranteeing your water line will be as good as the day it was painted for up to 20 years.
All boats are grit blasted to sa3 before 250 microns of jotomastic 87 2-part epoxy blacking is applied. Glass re-enforced systems are available all our blacking comes with a 4-year guaranty against paint failure. Our prices start from £60 per linear foot + vat
Painting
We can tailor a package to suit your needs, whether you are looking for a more traditional hand painted finish or a highly durable two part sprayed finish, the team at Gibson and Kentwright can offer all techniques.
Our use of the Jotun epoxy ac paint system has been perfected over many years and is now well-known country wide for its high levels of gloss its depth of colour and its staying power in a harsh environment. The Jotun colour system uses 2 different epoxy primers jotomastic 90 as a base primer, Jotomastic 90 is specially designed for areas where optimum surface preparation is not possible or required and provides long-lasting protection in environments with high corrosivity. It can be used as a base primer in atmospheric and immersed environments. Jotomastic 90 is suitable for use on properly prepared carbon steel and a range of aged coating surfaces. It can be applied at sub-zero surface temperatures. We then apply ‘Pengaurd’ sanding primer. Pengaurd Primer is a high-molecular-weight epoxy sanding primer. It is used as a primer as part of a complete system in atmospheric and immersed environments.
Both paint systems are applied via an air assisted airless paint sprayer, after which ‘mega gloss ac’ is applied.
MegaGloss AC is a premium acrylic polyurethane topcoat specifically designed for a high gloss finish with excellent gloss retention. Using the latest resins and binder technologies, this coating is abrasion resistant and is typically used as topcoat in atmospheric environments. MegaGloss AC has excellent colour retention and can be polished and buffed if required.
This paint system is used on many of the mega yachts currently in service and gives outstanding performance in the inland waterways environment
Prices start from £200.00 per linear foot + vat
Welding
From welding a fender eye on, to a new cabin or even for your boat to be lengthened – We are here to help to get your boat back into pristine condition. Here at Gibson & Kentwright, we endeavour to offer the “narrow boater” a complete service. The main part of any narrow boat is the hull and structure, therefore we can offer you our on-site accredited staff who specialise in welding and fabrication.
Grit blasting
Treating your narrowboat to this service is the best thing it could possibly receive to its painted surface, this is because steel naturally wants to rust caused by the mill scale. Mill scale on new steel is dark in colour unless exposed to the damp then it rusts. When a boat is sand or grit blasted the grit penetrates the steel removing this mill scale, significantly increasing the life of any further paint on the hull or cab.
Sand Grit Blasting is the key to a long lasting, problem free, successfully painted narrowboat. Also very important is the conditions in which the narrowboat is painted!
