We are a friendly professional narrowboat painting service based at Redhill Lock, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, in the East Midlands.

Thomas is an experienced, professional boat painter and produces some of the best paint jobs on the cut.

Matt started coach painting for Tristar boats ltd in 2013 and quickly progressed through the ranks. In 2016 Matt decided to go out on his own and started Gibson boat painters from a Polly tunnel at Redhill marina. He quickly realised single part paints were not really the future so soon switched to 2 part top coats. Over the years he perfected techniques and changed to several different paint brands before coming back to Jotun. Using their full system of epoxy base coats and mega gloss ac topcoats. He had been helped massively to perfect the application by Kevin Lockwood formally of Marine Industrial (now of sml paints) and we still use the same system today. In 2019, Matt took over a large painting workshop based at Redhill Marina and began streamlining the business into what it is now.

Thomas started his journey into boat building and painting in 2014. What had started working on boats as more of an ‘Odd Job man’, painting a tiller or replacing a water pump had quickly progressed to working as a freelance boat builder/painter working for companies like Kingfisher Narrowboats, Mills Dockyard, Paul Smith Joinery, The Fitout Pontoon and then took on a role at Tristar Boats Ltd in early 2016 where Matt started to teach Tom the art of spray applications.

Matt asked Thomas Kentwright to join forces in April 2021 as a partner to take over the running of the paint shop after purchasing 2 more boating related business Onboard solar and Marine insulations ltd.

Gibson and Kentwright Boat Painters now employ 3 members of staff and paint up to 20 boats a year from our centrally heated workshop allowing them to work all year round.
